coming home - August 29th

I forgot to include this picture in our trip summary.  Precious........  I sat in the back with the boys and did homework the whole way home.  One thing Joe had to do was write about his trip.  He chose to write about the Washington Monument (good choice).  As part of the write up, he drew a picture.  I LOVE this picture so much.  This is in his school journal (which we will get to keep as soon as it's filled up).  LOVE LOVE LOVE their school journals!

Joe also drew some pictures on paper provided by the Allen's (thanks Allen's!!).

And, also on our way home, we stopped at the New River Gorge bridge near Fayettesville, West Virginia.  This bridge is AWESOME!! 

Per wikipedia to get the exact stats....The New River Gorge Bridge is a steel-arch bridge. With a length of 3,030 ft, it was for many years the longest in the world of that type.  It is now the third largest arch bridge in the world (still the largest in the United States). Its arch extends 1,700 feet. Part of U.S. Route 19, it is crossed by an average of 16,200 motor vehicles per day.  In 2005, the structure was further immortalized when a depiction of the span was placed on the West Virginia state quarter.

The New River Gorge Bridge carries US 19 over the New River at a height of 876 ft, making it the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas, and the fifth highest in the world. Before the 2004 opening of the Millau Viaduct in France, it was the highest in the world.  Several suspension bridges in China have since surpassed them. The current record holder is the Si Du River Bridge which opened in November 2009 and currently has 1,549 ft of clearance above the river of that name.
